Cory Callan Chapter 11 In chapter we learn a little history of Walt. On his resume it says “clearance: Current U.S. department of defense top secret. Walt to make ends meet in college had a job playing the piano in a quartet. When Russia released Sputnik 1, job opportunities became open with NASA and Walt jumped on it. He would begin working on the Hughes Air craft. One shocking thing that explains why Walt and Billie always fight is that Walt had/ is having a second relationship with Marcia in California. Because Chris was an excellent student and did well on a standardized test, he was placed in higher level classes but Chris did everything he could to get out of it because he didn’t want extra school work. As a child Carine emulated Chris and because Chris played the French horn she wanted to play it. Carine beats him out for first chair as a sophomore while Chris was a senior. Chris ran a 10k as a child and he loved it because he got to be outdoors and in the country. On the weekends Chris’s buddies went in search of keg parties or tried to get into Georgetown bars but Chris found that he could have fun talking to prostitutes and homeless people and talk about how they can better their lives. Also on one particular Friday, Chris spent ten dollars on hamburgers and went around handing them to homeless people. Chapter 12 One thing that was uncharacteristic of Chris is that he gave speech his father’s party in which he praised his father. One thing to be noted is that he had a few drinks. After the party Chris leaves on a transcontinental journey and when he returns home his sister and mother are worried about him because he had lost 30 pounds. It was so because he got lost in the Mojave Desert and suffered from dehydration. Chris’s first year at Emory was memorable because after the first 90 days his roommate dropped out. After his sophomore year things begin to change with Chris and he becomes more into himself and less extravert. Chris finally finds out about Walt’s second wife and he is very mad about it because he has become a hypocrite. Also Chris makes his first trip to Alaska and absolutely loves it. Chapter 13 In this chapter we learn more about Chris from his sister Carine but we also learn a little about her husband. They co-own a car repair service and she didn’t envision working long days like her parents did but she is following in their footsteps. Fish comes home to deliver the bad news about Chris’s death to Carine and they immediately drive to Virgins. The next morning Sam and Carine fly out to Anchorage to recover the belongings left by Chris. Chapter 14 Jon included this chapter because he finds to be a little bit like Chris. Jon is an experienced climber and wants to climb what the locals call Devils Thumb because it’s tempting like the devil and it brings about evils. Another comparison to Chris is that Jon wants to do it alone just like Chris wanted to be. One difference is that Jon had told someone to drop off supplies whereas Chris didn’t want any help from anyone. Also Jon accepts his defeat when he realizes that he can’t make it to the top and turns around while Chris doesn’t feel like the wild has conquered him and continues living in the wilderness.
